Trip to LA

"Do you know the way to San Jose?” Or anywhere out of LA?
My Son, Chris and I flew from Fort Myers to Chicago on American Airlines (AA) which is like reaching over your shoulder to scratch your ass. Go north to go west young man. Crowded, no leg room, skinny seats and old stewards (-ess) are my 1st impression and lasting impressions.

Rented van from off airport Van Rentals and was in the hotel by 9 pm LA time. Beer at hotel bar was six bucks. Went to bed.

Slept well in the most ancient hotel in LA. Quaint doesn't come near to describing the mostly Mexican décor sprinkled with Chinese and Buddhist art work. Next morning I was up at dawn Fort Myers time, which is 4am LA time. No wifi in hotel so went to McDonald's and ate 1st breakfast at 5. Second buffet breakfast at 7:30 in hotel lobby restaurant with brothers and wives was very good and reasonable.

'Where the f.... is the sun?' Downtown LA (we were right next to the Omni) has some real tall buildings but we couldn't see anything above the 8th floor until 2pm because of the 'marine event' (smog).

Wednesday evening rehearsal dinner at the Home restaurant in Burbank. Small but the food was good. Fresh caught Salmon was great. Speeches and smoozing with bride- to-bes' family and our family that we haven't seen for eons. Very nice time. Natalie's father is a great guy and wonderful host. Brother Jim's room was the gathering point so we watched the Series and shot the stuff.

Friday was a very busy day. 1st Birthday party for Connor. Then Wedding @ the Burbank Forrest Lawn church ( http://youtu.be/3j6lGySzcT4 ) before reception downtown LA. Saturday we had a picnic at Marina Del Ray and Chris was enthralled by those damned Sea Lions on the marina docks.



Watched Notre Dame at a bar named Riordan's and it's logo depicted a son of the old sod but everyone working there was Mexican. No complaints because they turned on ND despite the grumbles of USC fans. Watched 3 quarters (blow out) before an old friend invited us to Santa Monica for Saturday evening. Watched UFC and Boxing while catching up on old times. He's the one who encouraged Chris to take up Brazilian Judo but they didn't spar because Chris' knee isn't quite healed and Eddie has a bruised rib.

Sunday, back on AA. Not any better but did go through Dallas but had a nearly 4 hour lay over. Glad to be home at 11 pm in Fort Myers Beach!

Boating; Nude beach, does Ft. Myers Beach really need another one?

Nauti Turtle is no more... Closed May 2014 We were sitting at the Nauti Turtle watching the thunderstorms move towards us. Tim the Restorer was updating our group via WeatherBug on his smart phone, "I can't believe it! The reds (really bad) just turned to yellows (not so bad) and split. It's going around us again!" "Okay by me," said Sweet Eileen the bartender. The bar was weekend busy so she ran off to cover the other end of the outside bar. Rain meant a loss of business. "It's the damned sky scrapers they built on the beach," said Cracker Bob, "I've had to water my lawn ever since the Diamond Head hotel was built." It is his favorite bitch. It's not easy being the last native Floridian around. He'd sold out ten years ago and took those 'Yankee Dollars' inland to be away from us but they built a road right through his 5 acres and gave him a new pile. Boating; Fishing Trip from Hell

Speaking of mutinies, I seldom approve but there are times and places for everything. I think Saturday and overnight Sunday might have been a perfect scenario. Several members of our world famous "Dead End Canal Yacht Club" wanted to do some deep sea fishing. As you know, deep in the Gulf of Mexico means way out there. http://www.soundingsonline.com/dispatches/290946-video-marlin-jumps-into-boat The Captain of a local fishing charter boat promised 24 hours of blissful fishing 80 miles from shore. They always promise something like that but rarely fulfill the dream. "That's why they call it fishing, not catching," is there standard retort. The rest of the club was involved in our Sunday brunch so we didn't pay much attention. I did inquire if they'd filed a float plan but that was the extent of my concern.
