This is the tale of Hard Luck Hannah of Texarkana!


About 5 years ago Hard Luck Hannah and Two Gun Texas Pete joined the 'Dead End Canal Yacht Club. They were out bid on a home foreclosure auction on the canal. She took it especially hard and branded herself when she exclaimed, “Gull-durn it, that's always our luck!” Texas Pete was a lay-minister/fisherman/shrimper so they don't swear, much.

The club felt so bad that we immediately accepted them as new social members, they couldn't be full members because they don't live on the canal. They bought a house on an adjoining canal and Pete bought a small bait seiner boat. He is a handy guy to know if you fish live bait.

Hard Luck Hannah was a Texas school teacher for about 30 years. “I took the buy-out and reduced pension 'cause we needed to eat after the 'cane took Pete's boat!”

“Not much of a pension but we got along with me working the oil fields. Finally we got the insurance check, sold our ranch and came to Florida to be near Hannah's cousin and his family,” said Pete over a beer at the clubhouse. “Unfortunately, Gomer's double wide burned down just before we arrived and they moved into the trailer we'd picked out for ourselves.”

“They're paying us rent but the experience has strained our relationship so we don't speak unless they need a repair on the trailer,” said Hannah.

“We thought our luck had changed when we hit the Florida Lottery for a bunch,” said Pete, “but I owed the IRS a pot full of money so they got most of it but we had enough left to buy the house.”

“It's got Chinese dry wall and the formaldehyde is eating all our pipes. We're in a class action suit against the Commies but don't expect much if anything from them,” said Hannah.

“They are exactly the same as our Dimocrats,” said Run-aground Ralph. Erie Earl threw the yellow flag for talking politics in the club house.

Ralph threw a dollar bill on the table like he had it planned. “I got my say and that is that!” Meeting adjourned.

Boating; Captain Manny Lee and Corazon Frisbee!

  In response to a recent blog/column, I received a picture of the new 'Corazon Frisbee', the one year old queen of Cap'n Manny Lee's Marshall sloop sailboat named after her ; Captain Manny Lee and Corazon Frisbee are living large in the Florida Keys @ Bone Island Bob's private marina in Islamorada, Florida, mile marker 74.5. Private Charters aboard his boat from one to five passengers. Throwing the Frisbee for 'Sweetie Corazon' is no charge but remember she never quits just like her predecessor. For her birthday she received a new coconut (husk and all) along with a few other treats. The coconut husk is great dental floss. Remembering The Split Rail Restaurant?

Does Anyone Else Remember The Split Rail Restaurant? It was once a favorite place for beach ppl for breakfast and lunch. Us younger members of the “Dead End Canal Yacht Club” could pull our small boats up to the rickety dock and have a beer and a few chicken wings in the late afternoon. I'm sure you've guessed that I write of a long ago era before happy hours became the rage. Circa 1990! My wife, Marion and I lived at the Boardwalk Caper which was a boater's paradise but not on the DEC. We ate breakfast often at the Split Rail and I attribute much of my heart problems to those delicious heart cloggers. Me, myself and I ate there three mornings a week for a solid 15 years because my office was on the beach. I'm not sure how many Greek immigrants began washing dishes so they could learn to bus tables then run the fryer and fry the eggs before becoming the owner but I remember a half dozen.
