“It's going to be 100 degrees today
and the humidity will be 99 % so it the perfect storm of summer
weather,” said Erie Earl as he treaded water in the pool. The 'Dead
End Canal Yacht Club' had it's weekly Sunday morning brunch at Earl's
house. He'd made the food and was hot from standing over the grill.
“The Eggs Benedict were deeelicious,
Mr. Earl,” said hot Tamale as she helped clean up the aftermath.
Earl said she was welcome and smiled to himself because he received
more compliments than 'Boston Bob' for his brunch effort. Time was,
we couldn't get anyone to cook so the the 'Ladies Axillary' had to
cook every week. That got old and for a while we went out every
Sunday.
Boston Bob was the one who revived the
tradition. Mostly because he was to cheap to pay for breakfast, he is
a sailor you know. Last summer he cooked every Sunday because he
didn't drive for the airport transportation but season came and he
had to work most Sundays. Several members stepped up and took over
the chore because some accused Bob of profiting from the $5 per
person fee. No one realized that we had so many frustrated chefs in
the club but since then the calendar is full of rotating cooks.
Miami Enrico and Hot Tamale entertained
last week. We had Eggs Caliente instead of Eggs Benedict. Most of us
really enjoyed it but some went for the scrambled eggs, link sausage
or pancakes which are the standby staples. The dish was Spanish with
a Cuban twist. A bed of chips covered with re-fried beans, chili, hot
peppers to taste, shredded yellow cheese and two fried eggs.
Guacamole and whipped cream were optional.
I ate two plates as hot as I could get
it and happily sweated through the morning. Later on I got in my pool
with a block of ice and hugged it until my red face returned to pink.
No one wanted to go boating because of the black lake water. I'm
still pissed at the Pukin' Pelican so I tapped a new keg of Pabst
Blue Ribbon and cooled of my insides. Aah, life is good on a Sunday
but it'll be even better with NFL football.
PS Cleveland Jack slept in so he could watch the Horseshoe tournament before going out fishing for 24 hours. He's my hero!
