“'Dead End Canal Yacht Club' special neighborhood defense meeting will now come to order,” said

Defense Committee chair 'Farmer' Chuck. He really isn't a farmer but he is from farm country, Columbus Ohio.

“I object to this entire proceeding,” said Run-aground Ralph, ”it is unconstitutional, irrelevant and not provided for under our bylaws.

“You might object but by the look of that AR15 resting against your knee, you seem to be endorsing defense of our neighborhood,” said Erie Earl.

“That's where you're wrong! I am against gun control and all these little groups eventually change focus to taking away my guns. I defend my own,” said RR.

“How can you deny the evidence of San Bernadino and Paris. Your big gun is designed to kill people whether they are in the hands of our military or terrorists,” said Denver Darlene.

Farmer Chuck intervened. “I want everyone to show his or her weapon to defeat ISIS on this canal!”

At least half the older members held up handguns of differing calibers and configuration. Cap'n Crunch proudly waved a 'Dirty Harry' 44 Magnum which seemed to be to heavy for sustained waving. The other half held onto an assortment of shotguns, rifles and a few Machetes.

Everyone looked around and most focused in on Boston Bob, our resident tree huger, liberal. An odd looking car key hung from his hand and he proudly swung it back and forth.

“It's a Ford Hybrid. I just bought it. Hardly uses any gas or oil but it goes real fast,” Bob said through a devious smile, “your SUV's pay for all that killing. Stop buying the oil and save lives....”

  In response to a recent blog/column, I received a picture of the new 'Corazon Frisbee', the one year old queen of Cap'n Manny Lee's Marshall sloop sailboat named after her ; Captain Manny Lee and Corazon Frisbee are living large in the Florida Keys @ Bone Island Bob's private marina in Islamorada, Florida, mile marker 74.5. Private Charters aboard his boat from one to five passengers. Throwing the Frisbee for 'Sweetie Corazon' is no charge but remember she never quits just like her predecessor. Remembering The Split Rail Restaurant?

Does Anyone Else Remember The Split Rail Restaurant? It was once a favorite place for beach ppl for breakfast and lunch. Us younger members of the “Dead End Canal Yacht Club” could pull our small boats up to the rickety dock and have a beer and a few chicken wings in the late afternoon. I'm sure you've guessed that I write of a long ago era before happy hours became the rage. Circa 1990! My wife, Marion and I lived at the Boardwalk Caper which was a boater's paradise but not on the DEC. We ate breakfast often at the Split Rail and I attribute much of my heart problems to those delicious heart cloggers. Me, myself and I ate there three mornings a week for a solid 15 years because my office was on the beach. I'm not sure how many Greek immigrants began washing dishes so they could learn to bus tables then run the fryer and fry the eggs before becoming the owner but I remember a half dozen.
