While I was away at war....
It is surprising to me how well
Veterans get treated at the VA. Sure, I've read about the abuses of
the Arizona Veteran Hospitals so I keep awaiting to be mishandled or
at least delayed in my treatment but it hasn't happened ever in my
long years of treatment. I would have expected my care to be
adversely affected because Florida get's the same 'bull rush' every
October from Northern Vets who demand winter care.
While awaiting transfer to a room in
non-critical post op, I was joined by an alert fellow patient who was
severely critical of everything that the VA does. “These people
don't have a clue,” he said in a not very hushed volume. “I've
missed lunch and probably won't get dinner,” he said. I told him
that the floor had extra trays but he insisted that the food would be
tepid and or old.
“Actually they have split sides where
the hot is kept hot and the cold is really cold. Even in the
temporary storage compartments,” I said.
After a while he received a piping
hot/cold tray from the storage but had lost his appetite by then. All
he wanted was a second ice cream from a different tray which the
Nurse denied him because some other late transfer to the unit
wouldn't get there's. “See what I told you,“ he said.
After a long nap we told stories and I
wanted to get my 'Crank' story mixed into the BS session. He readily
admitted to being one. “I was sure you were! I can spot 'em a mile
away!
