Dead End Canal Yacht Club loves the Nauti Parrot

Image
Nauti Parrot opening a new store (already have one in Marina town) May 1st in the old Channel Mark building. Most of my readers weren't of drinking age in 1989 when the Channel Mark moved into the fire damaged Seabrease/Pit BBQ restaurant on Hurricane Pass, San Carlos Blvd. The Pit had good BBQ and the Seabrease was a very colorful, rough house bar patronizing commercial fishermen and women plus rugged individuals from all walks of life. A fire in the BBQ pit burned a portion of the roof and the place closed in October 1985. The building was extensively renovated and became the Channel Mark until it became Tim's Place @ the Channel Mark in 2004 thru 2008. Afterwards it seemed to be a new place every 1 to 2 seasons. The most successful of the recent past was the Nauti Turtle. Least successful was 'Boot Kickens' which preceded Nauti Parrot. We, Dead End Canal Yacht Club members welcome a seasoned group of owners that will hopefully eradicate the 'Boo...

Hannah's Sudden Loss

Image
Sudden Loss The 'Dead End Canal Yacht Club' held a memorial drink fest at the Pukin' Pelican last weekend. We've been doing that a lot lately but most of the time it's for a resident who had moved off the canal to a Nursing home or a relatives house above the Mason Dixon Line. Hard Hearted Hannah's son was a part time resident at her abode whenever he wasn't off riding his Harley or working on a fishing boat or Shrimp boat. Hard Hearted Hannah lost her son last week. Not 'can't find him lost' but Dead lost. Some of us think he took his own life but the official report has it listed as an accident. It happened in a very dramatic manner, just off the old Tampa to Miami road, Tamiami Trail. Seems he was seated on a Mangrove leg on a remote Mangrove tree somewhere near the thousand islands. He had been camping with a female friend who speculated that suicide was his intent but didn't alert anyone for fear of losing the drugs he...

My Apologies...

Boating is... by boatguy Ed While scanning thru the ever decreasing comments in my Blog about the Dead End Canal Yacht Club one particularly nasty one leaped from the handful. Leaving out all personal info from the writer except to say that I feel sorry for his obvious incarceration in whatever institution he is forced to reside. Here goes; "boatguy, you are as alike as two peas in a pod with all the other bullshit bloggers. At your own leisure, whenever you get around to it no matter the loyalty you've asked for from the people who you read your occasional drivel. No wonder you aren't in the papers anymore! Write about boats or take the easy way out, copy and paste news into your blog." "Don't leave us hanging weeks at a time and not tell us about developed characters that we've come to like, love and hate. F.O.", and then he signed it with his twitter handle. A true numb skull! I am not going to try to justify my inaction...

Fort Myers Beach Lament

Image
What happened to the beach area restaurants? Maybe there were toooo many waterfront watering holes and restaurants but to lose sooo many is spooky. I know the beach road had a little to do with the decline of one or two. Boot Kicken' view! Okay, I'll give you Boot Kicken's at the Channel Mark because they never had a clue as most operators of that hard luck joint haven't. Who'd name a waterfront Bar; Boot Kicken's and it not be a country place? Who can forget the 4X8 sheet of plywood with one word sprayed painted on it,  'OPEN' and the sign was propped up in the back of a pick-up truck. Makes you want to eat, drink and ride a Bull, huh? So, just before the end,  I asked the owner the one question everyone was asking me, why would someone with so little experience open a 'high nut' restaurant where no one else had made it. She hung her head and said, "I couldn't believe I could lose with that view." She didn't hi...

Cruising Calendar

“I'm an American,” said the bag boater member as he poured another beer from my kegerator. He was answering an illegal question from Stink-pot Dino. Illegal because the discussion of politics has been outlawed by by-law in the 'Dead End Canal Yacht Club' clubhouse (my garage). “I knew it, another Loon Dimocrat,” said Dino to his 'R' side of the garage, “but what would you expect from a blow boater, college professor.” “We had to recruit some intelligentsia because you and yours were dragging down the club's IQ average. The yachting counsel demands a minimum of 50 or they'd pull our charter,” I said. “Intelligence...he's drinking that cool-aide you serve! Pabst Blue Ribbon should be banned along with fake Dimocrat News. Leave it to a cheap bag boater,” Dino shouted. The weighted yellow penalty flag flew past Dino's nose so close that he had to jump back and shout 'watch that shit'! “You're penalized 15 yards for ille...

VA

I've always been suspicious of the stories coming out of the Arizona Veterans Hospital because I have been so well treated by our Lee County, Miami and St. Pete VA. Since they have opened the new Outpatient Clinic in Cape Coral/North Fort Myers, I feel even better served.  During the off-season months it is possible to get an appointment within days but in-season the available appointments are far apart. When you drive through the expansive parking lot in front of the nearly new, huge OPC the reasons for the difficulties are evident. Every other auto has out-of-state plates and these snowbirds vets show up and slow up Florida and Arizona facilities. They have every right to be here and get care but why they bitch so much about wait times is ironical. It is self-evident that older men are cranks. Some younger ones, too but a lot of that is PTSD related. What do I mean by 'cranks'? Some people are cranky all the times and a little paranoid, too. They feel th...
