2013 Ft. Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade preview
Saturday November 30th was a
day that will live in infamy according to our “Dead End Canal Yacht
Club” members from Alabama. So infamous that very few of our
members have prepped their boats for the Fort Myers Beach Christmas
Boat Parade. It takes a lot of work to ready a normally 'normal' boat
to light up like a Christmas tree. In years past, club members joined
together to do the work on the Saturday before.
College football proved more powerful
than Santa Claus even for most of our Grand Children. Possibly, it
was the allure and the immediacy of the forward pass or the 109 yard
missed field goal return by Auburn over Alabama. Or the other dozen
College football games that had our eyes glued to the big screen TV's
around the canal OR the 'Pukin' Pelican.'
Seven 'DECYC' boats plan to participate
in the parade, Erie Earl has returned just to pilot his 32 foot
pocket Trawler, Miami Manny and Hot Tamale and Run-aground Ralph are
paying College kids to decorate the community 40 foot Jersey. Ralph
doesn't trust Hottie around her former lover so he horned in on their
Xmas trip.
Boston Bob will have his sailboat
decked 'the halls' out despite Boston College's loss to Northern
Illinois, what? He's depressed but working hard. What can you expect
from a Catholic University that insists their player attend class?
Ditto Notre Dame who lose the ability to call running plays in the
4th quarter.
The ladies auxiliary-ist are the
driving force behind our Fort Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade
efforts. We lazy, anti-Christmas spirit, good for nothings have been
the recipients of some powerful pressure. They may even boycott the
annual 'DECYC' Christmas party but I doubt it. They are a moderating
force determined to counteract our more exuberant intentions.
And this Saturday will be no better
because the College Football playoffs. Especially the Ohio State vs
Michigan State smash up. Especially because so many of the members
LOVE Ohio State and nearly an equal number loathe the team. Don't
forget the SEC, ACC and the rest.
How could we drive our boats in the
dark while watching the tiny televisions on our boats? Impossible, I
tell you and we can't watch all the evening games at once at the
clubhouse so it's off to the 'Pukin' Pelican' waterfront sports bar
to wave at the passing boats and watch all the games. See you there!
