Boating; Pukin' Pelican faces summer downturn.

DO NOT CONFUSE THE PUKIN' PELICAN WITH NEW "PELICAN BAY RESTAURANT!"

They aren't all gone but the majority of the 'snow birds' have returned to the north. Glad to see you go and we will welcome you back in the fall. Please take a driving course while your gone. Anyway, some of the local biz will suffer.

Boatyards will lay-off workers, restaurants will try to discount their way through the off-season and grocery stores will just hang in there. The goodwill sewn in the winter will bear fruit this summer.

The 'Pukin' Pelican has lived on the snow birds. They were packed most happy hours because of daily food specials and cheap draft beer. If they can sustain this, they will be alright but they've also sewed some discontent. Several popular employees have been let go or quit and there has begun a backlash against there management style.

Is there a boycott? Not an organized boycott but just a bunch of people deciding en mass not to frequent the place as much as they once did. I on the other hand, told one of the owners why I wouldn't be back but mostly it's because it is so easy to get around the beach now.

In season the back up of traffic returning to the beach was an hour long. The islanders either didn't leave the beach or they hunkered down in traffic for the wait. The PP was a convenient stop over for a couple of beers and maybe some cheap eats.

If Mrs. boatguy was with me and she wasn't usually drinking then we could stay longer. By the way (btw) she doesn't approve of my stance on the Pukin' Pelican. She's gone through similar events with me. 15 years ago, the new owner of the 'Split Rail' restaurant took the half/half off the tables and replaced it with chalky water. I asked him to bring it back and he declined. I haven't been back to my, then, favorite three times a week breakfast place.

Then there was the 'Tim's Place' cheese plate debacle. I asked and asked or a personal cheese plate and menu change after menu change it didn't appear so I told Tim that a year from that day he wouldn't have seen me for a year. I never went back until he went under.

Am I an asshole, yes, but I always tell them why I'm leaving. I don't leave a restaurant unhappy and silent. You are a TERRIBLE person if you do that. The waitress may have just lost both parents in a tragic accident or the cook might have sliced off two fingers so the food was coming out a little slow and your pissed because (A) cold food (B) lousy service (C) weak drinks.

Tell the manager! Fill out the comment card. You'll tell 25 of your close friends, acquaintances and some strangers but you won't tell the management so they can try to make it up to you! Shame on you!

Anyway, best of luck to 'most' of our local watering places. We are looking forward to the opening "PELICAN BAY RESTAURANT!"
