Boating; Goodby John

It was a sad day when we laid poor Alaska John down! He was one of the founding members of the "Dead End Canal Yacht Club." He'd visited Florida in his 30's and loved the warm place he dreamed of when working in Alaska. Even though he was born in Missouri the Alaska name stuck. He spent winters here at first because the fishing was so good. Alaska in the summer and Florida in the winter for many years. Then he retired and moved permanently to his small house on a canal off the Caloosahatchee river. He loved the gatherings of the club but was a very infrequent visitor to our "Dead End Canal Yacht Club" in the last few years of his life. John's wife and three of his four children preceded him. His youngest daughter (61 years young) and his grandson (41) and three of his great grandchildren (20 - 18 & 16) attended the memorial service at the crematorium. The room was covered with pictures of this handsome man who lived life to the fullest if no...

A field trip to believeland!

A story promoted by Cleveland Jack, who else! Boating; Women rule the market!

These few statistics are hard to ignore if you are a boating guy. First, 75% of the choice about which boat to buy is made by the women of the family! Second, 90% of the choice to get out of boating is made by women! Let me explain, you see the first statistic deals with the final choice between several models or boats. The female partner in the deal usually has the final choice in the brand, color scheme and equipment.   That is a lot of power to have but it’s okay with me! The second statistic has to do with the reason that families get out of boating. “If Mama ain’t happy, nobodies happy,” my gray haired daddy used to say! Getting woman on the water isn’t a chore because they usually like boats but they don’t like to be uncomfortable unless they are sailors! We should plan our outings with that fact firmly planted in our brains. We should consider any tendencies to be mildly sea sick, easily sunburned or totally not into fishing as well as any other problem that might...

Boating; Sailors more hardy than powerboaters!

Image
http://www.tradeonlytoday.com/home/527024-rain-doesnt-deter-sailors-at-annapolis-show ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Despite cool temperatures and drenching rain, the mood was bright at Thursday’s opening of the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Md. Wearing foul-weather gear, a hardy battalion of serious buyers braved the docks — dodging puddles and dripping awnings — to the delight of exhibitors. “Amazing,” said Tom Armantrant, of Boat Leather, a Seattle-based manufacturer of wheel coverings, chafe gear and other leather products. Even as his 10-by-10-foot tent sprung leak after leak, he said, “There are an amazing number of people walking through — hardcore buyers and sailors shopping. They’ve seen product at other shows or on the Internet, and they are coming in today to buy.” Many exhibitors echoed that sentiment. Informed and dedicated buyers paid $35 for Thursday’s VIP pass, versus $18 Friday through Monday, in order to talk with exhibitors and dealers, avoid the crowds and sign on the...

Boating;l Moving Aboard

Is it time to cut the ties to land and move on board a boat? It seems that many people my age are doing just that. Why would you want to give up your spacious bathroom and your walk-in closet for a shower over the commode or have a living room the size of your former walk in closet? Baby Boomers are looking hard at sort of roomy but interminably slow trawler. A trawler, for the uninitiated among us is a semi or fully displacement boat ranging from 27 to 90 feet with one diesel engine and one diesel generator. The trawler typically has shore like amenities such as a large refrigerator, microwave, full size television, compact washer/dryer, stereo and a myriad of navigation aids possibly even radar. A trawler usually has a roomy layout with the salon (living room) including a small steering station. Down forward is the the galley (kitchen) and head (bathroom) and farthest forward is the forward cabin if the boat is large enough to have a rear cabin. Most of the mechanica...
